Working with an Editor

Have you ever worked with an editor before? If not this section will give you a better understanding of what to expect as we go through the process.

-Initially, you will contact me via the “Contact Me” button that is on my home page. I ask that you include your name and email address, type of editorial services you are possibly looking for, word count, genre of your manuscript, target audience, and budget you are working with. This gives me a general idea of what to expect before our first communication.

-I primarily communicate via email and respond within one business day. My office hours are from 10:30 AM-4:00PM EST Monday-Friday. Holidays exempt. Occasionally, I will have an open office on Saturdays. Hours may vary.

-I usually reply with a few additional questions regarding the information you provide. If you are still interested in my editorial services, I ask that you send me a 1500-word sample of your manuscript for review. (This is just a quick read through of your work to determine how in depth the editing needs to be. I do not make any changes or remarks regarding this sample.) This sample review typically takes three business days.

-After reviewing your sample, I will have decided if your manuscript is a good fit for my services.

- I then email out a proposal detailing what I recommend, including price and time frame for completing the project.

-I like to make a phone or Zoom call at this stage to discuss with the author to understand what has already been worked on, where you’re at now with the book, and what your publishing goals are.

-Upon agreeing to move forward, I will send out a personalized contract for you to sign, outlining the project details and what’s expected from both parties.

-Fees are determined based on client needs and expectations. Arrangements can be negotiated between client and editor that will be written up in the contract.

-After completing the editing and receiving full payment, I return the manuscript along with an editorial letter detailing the edits, and I will schedule a follow-up phone or Zoom call.
